EDITORIAL: 30 YEARS YOUNG
Information is a core element of any strategy. And when a strategy has to deal with the public, the media becomes the key factor for success. Thus we see the use and misuse of media for campaigning and awareness raising purposes, or during military, political and even corporate warfare.
Youth publications are a particular type of media addressed mainly to student segments, where issues concerning their academic and social life are dealt with, in addition to news and developments in their direct or indirect environment. Youth publications started at the beginning with posters and announcements. Then they evolved to occasional pamphlets. Later on, youth organizations started publishing periodical magazines and reviews. With the advent of digital technology, however, most of these publications started to go online to follow their target segments, meaning the youth, which started to spend more and more time in the digital world.
Zavarian Review is the official publication of the Zavarian Student Association (Z.S.A.), which is the student section of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Tashnag Party) in Lebanon. Zavarian Review was first published in 1979. Initially it started as a monthly bulletin distributed with the Aztag daily newspaper, and it was named Zavarian Monthly. Then, at the mid-80's, Zavarian Monthly became Zavarian Review, and was transformed to a periodical publication with a new layout and a wider variety of topics and studies.
Zavarian Review includes various sections, from politics, to science, to interviews with public and political figures. It is distributed free of charge in major universities, sent to the local media, and to foreign embassies in Lebanon. During the last period, the Zavarian Review was being published 3 to 4 times a year, covering topics such as Lebanese internal politics, the July 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon, youth concerns, socialism, tourism in Armenia, the Armenian Genocide, European Union, and many more. Numerous interviews were done with renowned figures, of which we can mention H.E. Mr. Ziyad Baroud, H.E. Mr. Demianos Kattar, M.P. Ghassan Mokheiber, M.P. Farid El-Khazen, Mr. Marcel Ghanem, the late Samir Kassir, and Mr. Patrick Renault, former representative of the European Delegation to Lebanon.
In late 2009, on the occasion of Zavarian Review's 30th anniversary, the Z.S.A. decided to follow the new trend and to introduce the Zavarian Review to the online arena of digital information. This is certainly considered to be a positive shift in the Review's 30-years path, a shift towards higher efficiency, deeper professionalism and wider reach.
Therefore, we start the year 2010 by introducing our first online issue. Hereafter, our aim will be to turn the online version of the Zavarian Review to an efficient podium to spread our word, and a regular checkpoint for interested knowledge-seeking youth.
